Once the confetti at your graduation ceremony falls to the ground and the comfort of uni is torn away, the reality of adult life starts to settle in. 1 - Gain As Many Experiences As You Can
It's always fantastic when you can gain experiences in your chosen field, however, in reality, this may not always possible. What is important though is that you are open to working in what may seem to be unrelated fields or unpaid positions. You'll gain a good depth and breadth in employable skills (for example, drive and adaptability) that are attractive to recruiters, and may create a point of difference that sets you apart from other candidates when applying for a position. Also, experiences don't have to always be strictly work related. Experiences can also include your travels, sporting teams, hobbies, volunteer work and so on. These experiences combined make you unique and help you stand out in the crowd.
2 - Network
Establishing and, more importantly, genuinely maintaining relationships in your network may give you access to job opportunities that may not have been available otherwise. For example, someone in your network recommends you for a position that recently became available at their workplace. These connections effectively expand your 'feelers' and allow you to be exposed to more opportunities. Building a professional network doesn't always have to take place in formal gatherings, such as events specifically geared towards networking. Networking can be just as simple as meeting new people through your friends.
3 - Take Advantage of Social Media
In our highly digitised world, more and more job opportunities are becoming available via social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Having a professional presence online can put you in good stead for nabbing a position announced on social media. In particular, LinkedIn is a valuable tool when seeking employment. Frequently maintaining and updating your LinkedIn profile can help attract employers directly to you. LinkedIn allows you to showcase yourself as a working professional, and contains important information such as your work history, skills, qualifications, education, and so on. Think of your LinkedIn profile as a way to sell yourself as an employee, so put your best foot forward.
