Some of the advantages of utilising the On Demand workforce is that it can increase innovation through having a diverse pool of workers which can lead to business growth. Other advantages include having lower overheads and reduced risks in relation to employees. However great the On Demand workforce can be, it also has its challenges to overcome.
Among the first of their kind Uber and Airbnb disrupted the economy through their creation of an online platform that connected labour and resources. Airbnb saw an opportunity in the market and made it possible for people to earn extra cash by renting out unused spaces in their homes. Uber worked on the same formula and offered people the opportunity to use their cars when and where they wanted to earn some extra cash.
"There are a number of different ways of finding work in Australia, and working as a contractor is a trend that is steadily rising. In 2013 17.2 per cent of the workforce in Australia were self employed, a number which has been increasing since then".
Both Uber and Airbnb saw an unnecessary role in having a third party involved in their respective industries. In creating a platform for these interactions to take place these companies have evolved these industries. Another industry that is evolving is the industry of recruiting. The process of hiring is becoming more streamlined. Workfast is an On Demand talent platform that connects workers and workplaces on a temporary or casual basis. These casual workers have flexible working agreements where they can set their own rates and hours.
These On Demand workers have common traits. The majority of these On Demand workers identified as prioritising job flexibility over another other factor when it came to work. A report by Xero concluded that 92 percent of On Demand workers said that they enjoyed the work that they do. This was compared to a survey conducted by Gallup which indicated that out of 150 million full-time employees , 7 out of 10 employees disliked their job due to the lack of flexibility in their work and life balance. Intuit identified five types of On Demand workers:
The Business Builders – A worker who is highly entrepreneurial and has a desire to be their own boss.
The Career Freelancers – A worker who works who enjoys building a career out of independent work.
The Side Giggers – A worker who is looking for supplement their income through multiple employers.
The Passionistas – A worker who is looking for work within an industry that they are highly enthusiastic about
The Substituter – A worker who is looking for work within an industry that has replaced the role of the traditional job.
