Job Description

Dogman workers assist crane drivers in the movement and direction of the crane loads. In most instances, a dogman will attach the load to the crane for placement. Larger loads need to be directed to fit the different sizes, shapes and weights. The dogman will find the safest way to attach and move a load ensuring that all safety standards at met including lifting capacity. Doggers will communicate with crane drivers using various methods. These may include; radio, hand signals or whistles. A doggers communication may not be limited to the crane driver but also the other workers within the vicinity of the crane load.  A dogman will also inspect a crane to make sure that there is no damage to the crane ensuring that it is fully functional.

Education & Qualifications

To be qualified as a dogman in Australia you must have a High-Risk Work Licence. This licence can be issued to you through many verified companies. You must also be 18 years of age to be qualified.  To find out where you can obtain a High-Risk Work Licence, please visit Worksafe Australia.

There are also traineeships that can be undertaken. These traineeships will typically take up to 12 months to complete.

Workers in the construction industry must undergo safety induction training and be issued with a Construction Induction Card (commonly known as a “white card”).

Skills & Attributes

– Must have good eyesight and hearing as you will be working from distances
– Must have a good indication of weights and be able to judge distances
– Fit and able
– Excellent verbal and non-verbal skills
– Have the ability to work at heights
– Knowledge of basic work safe practices

 Where Can You Get A Job As A Dogman?

A dogman works on large construction sites across Australia. The metropolitan areas of Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide and Hobart. Dogman will usually work on land and outdoors, however on occasion work may be located on ships, docks, factories and on mine sites.
