There are many different types of painters. However, painters in the trades are required to prepare surfaces to apply decorative and protective finishes. Most painters will be involved in domestic, commercial or industrial buildings both indoors and outdoors. Painters may inhale dangerous and toxic fumes. Masks must be worn, or proper ventilation must be installed for the worker.

To become a painter you can be an apprentice or traineeship. The apprenticeships will usually take between 24 to 48 months. Workers who paint in the construction industry must undergo safety inductions. After your training is complete painters will be nationally recognised through industry standards.
