Job Description

Plumbers are responsible for installing, maintaining and repairing water, gas, ventilation, heating, sewerage, and drainage systems. Plumbers are able to work anywhere in the country as their skills can often be universally applied to a whole range of jobs. Plumbers can choose to specialise in residential, industrial, or commercial work, or provide more general plumbing services.

Education and Qualifications

To work as a plumber, you will need to complete a plumbing apprenticeship. Plumbing apprenticeships usually take 48 months to complete.
To enhance your chances of finding work, you could also complete a pre-apprenticeship course at a TAFE or other tertiary education institution.

It is also mandatory that plumbers acquire a licence before they start working professionally. Different states and territories recognise different licences, so it is important you get the right one.

If a plumber is required to conduct plumbing work on a construction site, it is mandatory that they have a White Card (previously known as a Blue Card). The White Card shows that the holder has completed the OH&S General Construction Training Course and is allowed to be on the work site. It is a nationally recognised certification that does not expire unless the cardholder has not worked on a construction/building site for two consecutive years.
Another requirement for a plumber working on a construction site is Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Personal Protective Equipment refers to work apparel that helps to minimise the risk of injuries, such as helmets, high visibility vests and steel-capped boots.

  • Detail-oriented
  • Good organisational and planning skills
