Scaffolders play an important role on work sites as they are in charge of planning, inspecting, assembling, erecting, maintaining and disassembling scaffolding structures. Labour hire scaffolders help to ensure that construction is able to be done efficiently and effectively, as the scaffolding structure helps workers access difficult to reach areas of the site. Scaffolders also help to ensure that construction is able to be done safely, by providing level work platforms for high-up sections. Scaffolders are typically hired to work on construction, building and mining sites.
To become a scaffolder, a formal education or qualifications is not required. On the job training can be provided to build the necessary skills. Job prospects could be improved by completing a traineeship/apprenticeship, a scaffolding course at TAFE (or any other approved organisation), or acquiring at least a Basic Scaffolding ticket.
To operate as a scaffolder a high-risk work licence is required. This licence allows employees to do work that is legally considered ‘high risk’, and ensures that they have the training and knowledge to comply with the relevant laws to do the job in a safe manner. High-risk work licences can only be acquired through a Safework approved Registered Training Organisation (RTO) (consult your state/territory’s Safework website to find out how and where you can get your high-risk work licence). High-risk work licences are nationally recognised and must be renewed every five years.
Scaffolders work predominantly on building and construction sites as labour hire. To work in these environments, it is mandatory that they possess a White Card, as well as Person Protective Equipment (PPE).
A White Card provides evidence that a worker has undergone the OH&S General Construction Induction Training Course and is allowed to work on a construction site. It is a nationally recognised accreditation, allowing the holder to carry out construction work anywhere in Australia. White Cards do not expire, they only become invalid if the labourer has not worked on a construction site for two years in a row. Click here to apply for your white card.
Personal Protective Equipment is mandatory on work sites, due to the hazardous nature of these areas. PPE helps to prevent injury and maintain the safety of the workers on the construction site. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) refers to items such as steel-capped boots, high visibility vests and helmets.
In addition to the formal qualifications required to become a scaffolder, a good candidate will possess the following:
– Physical fitness
– Attention to detail
– A mindset focused on safety
– Excellent planning skills
– Communication skills
– A team player
– Ability to work at heights
Scaffolding is a necessary element on most work sites, so scaffolders are able to apply their skills to a range of projects across Australia. However, since the skill set is more specific than other labour hire positions, such as a general labourer, scaffolder positions may be scarcer and/or more competitive. Scaffolding jobs are more prevalent in the construction, mining and building sector.
