The Sydney Metro - Western Sydney Airport Line
A key pillar of the Parklife project is its dedication to environmental sustainability. The Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport Line is the first rail infrastructure project in Australia to commit to being certified carbon-neutral from the start of construction through to operation. This ambitious goal is being achieved through a combination of energy-saving designs, the use of solar panels and renewable energy sources, and a robust program of carbon offsetting. This focus on green infrastructure sets a new benchmark for major public transport developments in Australia, demonstrating that large-scale projects can be delivered with a minimal environmental footprint.
Beyond its environmental credentials, the Parklife project is deeply rooted in the cultural and ecological landscape of Western Sydney. The design of the six new stations, St Marys, Orchard Hills, Luddenham, Airport Business Park, Airport Terminal, and Bradfield—is informed by the narratives of Dharug Country. Working in collaboration with First Nations design agency Djinjama and the Connecting with Country Working Group, the project has developed a guiding design narrative of "carved earth connected to big sky." This concept is reflected in the station architecture, which features materials and colors that evoke the landscape of the Cumberland Plain, as well as striking oculus skylights that connect travelers to the sky above.
The project is also focused on creating high-quality public spaces and restoring the natural landscape. The rail corridor is being meticulously restored as part of the largest native ecology restoration program ever undertaken by Sydney Metro. This includes a dedicated Active Transport Corridor, which will provide new walking and cycling paths, further integrating the new railway with the surrounding neighborhoods. This holistic approach to design ensures that the new metro line will not only serve as a vital transport link but also as a catalyst for creating liveable, connected, and green communities in the Western Parkland City.
