The Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (WSI), a $5.3 billion transformative infrastructure project, includes a state-of-the-art cargo facility designed to enhance trade and economic growth in the Western Sydney region. The cargo facility, part of the airport’s broader development, is set to support up to 2,000 jobs during construction and over 19,000 direct and indirect jobs annually upon completion, reinforcing WSI’s role as a major aviation hub. Construction, which began in 2018, is on track for the airport’s opening in late 2026.
The Cargo Works package (CW1), awarded to the CPB ACCIONA Joint Venture in December 2023, encompasses the design and construction of critical components. This includes preparatory works such as site clearance, earthworks, stormwater drainage, and temporary fencing, alongside aeronautical works like aircraft pavements, airside roads, and fencing. The precinct works involve landside roads, car parking, truck staging areas, and purpose-built cargo facilities with airside and landside staging areas, gatehouses, and service connections. The facility is designed for scalability, with initial infrastructure like the 3,200-square-meter Dnata catering center (expandable to 6,400 square meters) already underway to meet future demand.

Sustainability is a key focus, with features like rainwater harvesting and energy-efficient systems integrated into the design. The cargo precinct’s strategic location ensures operational efficiency with seamless terminal integration and dedicated airside access. Managed by Bechtel, the project emphasizes local employment, with 30% of the workforce from Western Sydney, including 2.4% First Nations employees, and over $500 million invested in local businesses, fostering economic prosperity and connectivity.
